Harmony Week 2020

Harmony Week 2020

It is that time of the year where everyone comes together and celebrate our country’s rich heritage of multiculturalism. From 15 – 21 March this year, we celebrate Harmony Week.

What is Harmony Week?

Since 2003, Harmony Week has become Western Australia (WA)’s annual celebration of unity between heritage from every part of the world and the social, cultural and economic benefits that brings to every Western Australians.

According to the 2016 Australian Census, WA is one of Australia’s most culturally diverse States with 32.2 per cent of Western Australians born overseas. and our population was recorded to speak more than 240 languages.

There are many benefits WA gains from its culturally and linguistically diverse communities, including job creation, improved skill levels, the introduction of new skills and networks, and improved economies of scale.

The WA Government recognises how diversity has transformed WA to our vibrant multicultural State and wanted to celebrate cultural diversity by organizing events over a week. The Department of Local Government, Sport and Cultural Industries (DLGSC) created Harmony Week programs and offered funding to encourage communities, organisations, workplaces, colleges and universities to get involved. This is an opportunity for Western Australians to recognise, discuss and embrace multiculturalism.
