Manual Handling FAQs
Manual handling involves using your body to handle any object or client. Manual handling is a broad term and covers a wide range of activities including lifting, pushing, pulling, holding and restraining. Manual handling training teaches you how to safely perform these tasks, identify hazards and reduce injury from manual handling.
Unlike first aid training, your manual handling training Statement of Attainment does not expire. However, if it’s been 12 months since you undertook manual handling training, it’s always a good idea to retake this one-day training course to refresh your skills!
Healthcare workers are often required to manually handle patients and heavy medical equipment, which can lead to musculoskeletal injuries if appropriate training is not undertaken. Musculoskeletal injuries can be extremely painful and may require time off work for recovery. Prevention is always better than cure, so it is important that all healthcare workers receive appropriate manual handling training.
All healthcare workers can benefit from manual handling training, including::
- Disability support workers
- Aged care workers
- Nurses
- Physiotherapists
- Occupational Therapists
- Staff in the aged care or NDIS community
Carers looking to increase their skills - Informal carers such as family and friends
