Transforming lives through education, training and employment

About Us

Centacare Employment and Training is a not-for-profit registered training organisation that has been transforming lives through education, training and employment for more than 40 years. We offer programs, courses and support services to disadvantaged people in the Perth community who are looking to obtain the skills or qualifications necessary to find a job or go on to further study or training.

About the SEE Program

Centacare delivers the Skills for Education and Employment (SEE) program, which is a free adult education program that helps participants develop their language, literacy, numeracy and technology skills, with the aim to prepare them for employment, training or further study. We welcome people of all ages from a wide range of cultural backgrounds to join our multicultural student population, including youth and mature-age students, migrants and refugees, and Indigenous and non-Indigenous Australians.

The Volunteer Tutor Position

We are looking for enthusiastic and committed volunteers who are passionate about education to provide support to our SEE teachers across our training sites in Cannington, Gosnells, Armadale, Fremantle and West Perth. Some of the key activities you will be involved in include:

  • One-on-one support to help students with reading, writing and numeracy to reinforce teacher-led activities
  • Facilitating conversational groups
  • Supporting computer activities

The Volunteer Tutor Training Program

All successful applicants will participate in our 8-week Volunteer Tutor Training Program (one morning per week), which covers various topics including:

  • Volunteers’ expectations
  • Adult learning principles
  • Strategies for working with adults who are beginning English language learners, readers, writers, or beginning to add, subtract, multiply and divide
  • Strategies for spelling
  • Using collaborative, hands-on materials
  • Occupational Health and Safety (OHS)

What are we looking for in you?

Applicants must be willing to undergo a National Police Clearance check.

Experience in adult literacy and/or teaching adults English as an additional language is preferred but not essential.

We are very flexible with the amount of time you wish to commit to Centacare – it could be 3 hours per week or even 3 days per week, the choice is completely yours. However, what we do need from you is consistency and reliability; we need volunteers who are willing to commit to a set number of hours each week for at least 6 months.
